Trial listen request for MLTL Altec or GPA 604 speaker

Hello to all, this is my first post here. I?m considering building a pair of MLTL cabinets for a GPA 604-8H-III or perhaps a vintage Altec 604. Before I commit the time and money, I?d love to hear a set and was wondering if there is anyone in my area of the country who would allow me to visit for a listen? I?m in Ohio and understand that my request may be a challenging one. I?m intrigued by what I have read about them and appreciate the support from the few I?ve e-mailed about the design.

I had MLTL speakers with 604-8K's in them for a couple of years. Just recently I replaced the 8K's with new GPA 604-8H-III's .

The difference in sound quality was quite apparent. So the 804-8K's went to ebay to some lucky person at a good price.

    And I'm a very Happy MLTL/GPA 604 owner.

If you ever venture to St Louis contact me for a listen!

You'll probably get more traffic if you spec your range of travel (by states, or zip+mileage or ...)

Gosh Will, that looks a lot like my room. Bot the 604s are now in shipping boxes, not speaker boxes. Same A5 rig, too.

    !
The GPA 604-8H III's are quite nice. The Altec 604's that I really like are the 604-8G and the 604-8H's both Alnico.I didn't like the K's much the 604-G's came stock with the 23744 lite HF fram my favorite .Looks like the port is shortened up too on the A-5. About the same size as yours Pano ?

I like those cabs Will,do you have a cabinet plan for them ? Or just the dims would suffice Very Cool.

Re: Trial listen request for MLTL Altec or GPA 604 speaker

Good point gearfreak, the reason I didn't is because I thought I'd give it a few days and see if anyone turned up in my area. If I didn't get much traffic, I was going to open it up. I'm open for 5 hour (one way) or so drive which is still a miniscule area considering the globalness of the participants on this board, so I'm not sure that is much help.

I get to Charlotte, NC regularly on business, I'm planning a trip to the Boston area late summer, so I can be flexible.

I'm not sure that not hearing these is a show stopper for me, but it certainly would be nice and I thought at least worth the effort of a post here to see if I could get lucky.

I build custom furniture as a second hobby to audio and have done speaker cabinets in the past, so this is a project that I'm equally intrigued about from a woodworking standpoint as well as an audio standpoint.

Many thanks so far for the responses.

Interesting to observe (roughly, via googlemaps) that PHL and STL seem equidistant (via car, logical routes) from either applicable border of Ohio.

i.e. Both are either ~6 or ~10 hours (to the nearest and farthest border).

So you can flip a coin... though Dummerwill probably has nicer digs.
I've long since relocated the band out of the listening room, but that doesn't mean it's big ;-) .

PM me if passing though PHL way.

    * Edit - I don't have the GPA's, only Altec models.

Yeah, port on Will's A5 looks similar to mine. My ports have a 5" depth, IIRC.

    Yo AB
    If you're interested my MLTL dimension are 44"H X 24"Deep X 19" Wide.

This is my 3rd MLTL cab :
1st were smaller 44"X20"X19" in MDF
2nd were 44"X24"X19" MDF they were destroyed by Flood of 2006
now these 44"X24"X19" in Baltic Birch much nicer sound !

    Panny :
Yeah I know you have an A5 system too. There is something about a multicell horn
that does wonders of mid-range! I find myself listening to the A5 system a lot
because it sounds so REAL !

    Have fun!
